SHOES MAKE THE PERSON
It’s been said that shoes make the man (the term “man” was used in the general sense to describe “person.”). Indeed, shoes play an important role in terms of fashion and functionality. Consumers buy more shoes than ever these days. Shoes have become much more of a mainstream item among teenagers (and children even younger). Shoes do make the person.
Let’s take a look at some of the essential items in your footwear collection.
Let’s start with our everyday shoes. This author chooses clogs by Merrell. They are extremely comfortable and versatile. They last a long time and when I go shopping for another pair the trip is easy: I know just what I want. They provide good support and are reasonably fashionable in a casual sense (and much more of the world is casual today so they fit right in).
When it comes to shoes for working outdoors (in the yard or garden) I have two to choose from. One is a low rise-hiking boot (also from Merrell). These boots are good for dirty jobs in the yard, woods or garden. I also use them for short hikes in the woods. The other pair of footwear I use for working outdoors is a pair of Anywear clogs. They are specifically for use in the yard and garden and just like my Merrell clogs provide good support and functionality. (NOTE: A good pair of women’s garden clogs is the Super Clog made by The Original Muck Boot Company – available inexpensively online and in retail locations).
When it’s time to get dressed up I have several pair of loafers as well as a pair of oxfords. But when I really want to look sharp I rely on some dressy black boots from Kenneth Cole. Stylish and comfortable, they work for many dressier occasions.
I run and I have run for about thirty years. I always need a good pair of running shoes in my collection. I’ve tried many, but New Balance has been my pick for the past ten years or so. Lightweight, comfortable and supportive they’re great shoes for running (and believe me, at this point in my life I need everything I can get to make my runs easier).
Sandals. Can’t get around without a good pair of sandals. I’ve seen sandals really take off over the past few years as part of our collective footwear genre in the United States. I choose Birkenstocks and I wear them with and without socks. I wear them with shorts and jeans. They’re more versatile than ever before.
That’s just a start. Americans buy more footwear than ever today. They buy shoes, boots, indoor clogs, garden clogs, hiking boots, garden boots, sandals and lots more. Take your pick and make sure you have a well-rounded footwear collection. Because it’s true. Footwear does make the person.
